Unity Garden is Greentech Rising’s first green space project located on the (formerly vacant) lot at the intersection of east Swissvale ave and North ave in Wilkinsburg, Pa, just outside of Pittsburgh. UG (You gee) is a quarter acre of sunny, south facing land and is the meeting place between the three wards of Wilkinsburg across the street from Dollar General. UG has received support from community partners, including Wilkinsburg Department of Public Works, Garden Dreams (of Grow Pittsburgh), The Audubon Society, Wilkinsburg Pollinator Garden Group, Grounded Strategies, and private donors including Maria Cattell, a native plant habitat preservationist and Mechelle Jones, a micro-farm advocate. Unity Garden strives to bolster the neighborhood through beautification and collaboration with local entities and neighbors to help fill the needs of the community by increasing agency and access to fresh produce, supporting pollinators, education and is a community space in common. In a borough where opportunity is not evenly distributed and disparities are too abundant, we believe that actions speak louder than wards. UG is a land of opportunity where the community can come together to achieve common goals and unite and thrive.
